Today, historians, philosophers, and scholars of cultural heritage discuss about the relationship between periodizing labels historiography their symbolic employment within current political rhetoric. To understand relevance this issue in Italy, it can be helpful to look at academic public debates around category “Renaissance”. On one hand, article aims map some notable uses historical figure as a symbol; on other reconstructs tradition thought focused epistemic autonomy same category. With these intentions, I group Italian critics Johan Huizinga’s aesthetic view history – like Delio Cantimori, Eugenio Garin, heirs milieu “Scuola Normale” Pisa. Finally, evaluate whether there is any correspondence “Renaissance” symbol debate its historiographical label.
